Project 05

Beanpod – Micro-Apartment for Remote Creatives
ARCH 605a | USC Graduate Architecture Studio

The first assignment of ARCH 605a was to design a micro-apartment tailored to the needs of a specific user. Beanpod is a compact living space designed for remote creatives and workers, with a special focus on software engineers and digital designers. Inspired by my boyfriend—a remote software engineer—the project emphasizes mental wellness and productivity within tight spatial constraints.

The design prioritizes a generous workspace and ample storage for collectibles, tools, and daily-use items. A key spatial strategy is the clear separation of sleeping and living zones. This distinction creates a necessary psychological boundary for those working from home, as visually seeing the bed while working has been shown to induce stress or hinder focus. Beanpod introduces this transition intentionally, using elevation and spatial layering to define use zones within a minimal footprint.

While the design effectively addresses the needs of remote professionals, it does not accommodate ADA accessibility. Features like the sleeping loft, accessed via ladder, and tight circulation zones—such as the 5-foot span between storage, desk, and sink—make the unit unfriendly to wheelchair users. Future iterations would explore how to maintain the same psychological separation while improving accessibility.
